Qualification Number: 603/1432/1
Advance your teaching support career with this nationally recognised TQUK Level 4 qualification. Develop skills in curriculum planning, child development, special educational needs and classroom support through flexible online learning and practical workplace experience.
The TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants is a nationally recognised qualification designed to develop the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to undertake higher-level teaching support responsibilities.
Ideal for experienced teaching assistants, learning support staff and education professionals looking to progress, the course explores how Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) contribute to teaching, learning and pupil development.
Throughout the qualification, you will develop an understanding of the HLTA role, including professional responsibilities, working alongside teachers and supporting positive educational outcomes.
You will also explore child development and welfare, alongside the importance of recognising and supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.
The course examines approaches to supporting individual learners and small groups, helping you understand how to adapt learning activities to meet different abilities and requirements.
Additional topics include developing positive working relationships, curriculum planning, delivering learning activities and assessing pupil progress.
Learners must be working or volunteering in a classroom setting to complete the qualification, as practical experience and workplace evidence are required to demonstrate relevant teaching support skills.
By completing this qualification, you can strengthen your classroom practice, develop greater confidence in undertaking additional responsibilities and support progression into higher-level teaching assistant roles.
The Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants can support progression into roles involving advanced classroom support, curriculum delivery and supporting pupils with additional learning needs.
This qualification can also support progression into further education, including Level 5 qualifications in education, teaching and professional development.
Completing this Certificate does not automatically grant formal HLTA status. Some positions may require additional assessment against HLTA professional standards, relevant classroom experience or further qualifications.
Everything you need to know before getting started.
This qualification is suitable for experienced teaching assistants, learning support staff, SEN teaching assistants and individuals looking to progress into higher-level classroom responsibilities. It is particularly useful for professionals wanting to strengthen their knowledge of child development, curriculum delivery, inclusive learning and supporting pupils with additional needs.
Yes. You must be working or volunteering in a suitable school or educational setting because the qualification requires practical evidence of your classroom skills. This includes supporting learners, working with colleagues and contributing to teaching and learning activities. You will need access to appropriate opportunities for workplace assessment.
The qualification is assessed through a portfolio of evidence covering the required units. Assessment includes written assignments and practical workplace evidence, which may involve direct observations, professional discussions and witness testimonies. You must demonstrate both the knowledge and practical skills required to support teaching and learning at a higher level.
The qualification develops recognised knowledge and practical competence relevant to Higher Level Teaching Assistant roles and can support progression into higher-level positions. However, it does not automatically grant formal HLTA status. Obtaining that status involves a separate assessment process against the relevant professional standards, and employers may have additional requirements.
