This qualification consists of a secure, externally administered assessment delivered via the exam board’s online platform. It evaluates learners across three key components: reading, writing, and speaking, listening, and communication (SLC). The reading assessment tests the ability to understand and analyse complex texts, identify bias, evaluate credibility, and interpret layout features. The writing assessment measures the ability to produce clear, structured, and accurate written work across formats such as emails, letters, blogs, and articles, with focus on grammar, punctuation, and spelling. The SLC assessment evaluates spoken communication skills through group-based scenarios, reflecting real-life and workplace interactions.
By the end of the exam, learners will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, analyse information critically, and produce high-quality written and spoken English at Level 2 standard.

- The exam comprises one comprehensive assessment administered securely on the exam board's website. It evaluates various aspects of your English proficiency through two exams and an assessment:
- Reading: This exam assesses your ability to comprehend and analyse written information, including identifying biases and evaluating the credibility of authors' opinions. Additionally, it tests your understanding of different layout features and their impact on readers.
- Writing: This exam evaluates your writing skills across diverse formats, such as letters, newspaper articles, emails, and blogs. It also assesses your proficiency in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Speaking, Listening, and Communicating: An integral component of English proficiency involves effective speaking, listening, and communication (SLC). Hence, the Functional Skills English qualification includes an assessment in SLC, gauging your abilities in various everyday communication scenarios. This assessment will be conducted in a group setting.
